How to Add SRT Subtitle to MKV Video File
by Kayla Morrison • 2024-11-08 17:42:36 • Proven solutions
Chances are you want to add SRT to MKV videos. Merging SRT subtitles with MKV files is actually not that difficult as you think if you find the right tool to help you do it. In this tutorial here, I will describe how to permanently attach an SRT subtitle file into a Matroska .mkv file in detail.
The software I use is Wondershare UniConverter (originally Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate). More than a video converter, this software features many functions as below, and adding SRT subtitles to any video file is just one of its cool features. So you can use it as a great SRT to MKV converter to help you merge your SRT subtitles with MKV files effortlessly.

Step-by-step Guide on How to Add Subtitles to MKV Video
Step 1 Import the source MKV file.
Initialize Wondershare UniConverter on your Windows computer (Windows 10 here for illustration), go to the Toolbox category from the left pane, click the Subtitle Editor tile from the right, and select and import the source MKV file from your local hard drive to the app.
Step 2 Add the SRT file.
On the new window that opens next, pause the playback in the preview window to avoid any distractions, click the Import Subtitles, click the Add in the box that pops up in the Subtitle field at the bottom, and import the properly named SRT file containing the captions in the compatible format to UniConverter.
Step 3 Personalize the captions and attributes.
Click to select the wrong caption from under the preview window, and replace it with the correct one in the Subtitle text box in the right. Adjust the display duration of the text using the Start Time and End Time options. Make sure to repeat these steps for all the incorrect subtitles before proceeding further. Optionally, you can use the menus and buttons under the Font section to change the font type to your preferred one, increase or decrease its size, specify a different color, make it bold, or italicize or underline it as needed.
The opacity level and the stroke width of the font can even be adjusted using the Opacity slider and the Outline Width drop-down list respectively. If need be, the location of the text on the screen can also be defined using the Top, Middle, and Bottom buttons under the Position section. Once the subtitles are customized as per your preferences, click the OK to save the changes, and to get back to the main window.
Step 4 Set output format, target folder, and produce a new video.
Go to the Converter, import the file you have exported. Click and open the Output Format menu from the lower section of the right window, go to the Video, select the MKV from the left pane, and pick your preferred resolution from the right. Optionally, define a destination folder in the File Location field, and click the Save to create a new MKV video with subtitles.
