Share Bigger, Clearer Videos on Discord
A gameplay highlight, phone recording or tutorial may be too large to attach. Start with the online tool above for a quick reduction. For several clips or more control over encoding, use the desktop Video Compressor.
Check the upload limit shown in your Discord account, then aim below it. The size comparison shown here is illustrative, not a benchmark or a guaranteed result. Output size and quality depend on the source and settings; the AI mode shown is a desktop option.
Need to share videos on other platforms? You can also compress videos for WhatsApp or make videos smaller for email in just a few clicks.
How to Compress a Video for Discord in 3 Easy Steps
Why Choose UniConverter Video Compressor for Discord
Compress Gameplay Clips for Discord
Reduce the size of highlights, tutorials and phone recordings before sharing them in a chat. Use the online tool for a quick clip; processing time depends on file size, connection and settings. For several recordings, the desktop batch workflow avoids repeating the same setup for every file.
MP4 Compression for Discord with Quality in Mind
A smaller file does not mean identical quality. Preview fast movement, small text and dark scenes before sharing. Trim unwanted footage first, then reduce resolution or frame rate only as much as needed. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical starting point for broad playback compatibility.
Free Online Video Compressor for Discord
Use the online uploader for free video compression without installing the desktop app. Check the current input limits and options in the tool. The desktop download is a separate product with its own trial and paid features; downloading it does not make every desktop feature free.
Compress MP4, MOV and Other Supported Videos
Check the online uploader for its supported inputs. For more formats and encoding controls, use UniConverter Desktop; availability varies by platform and compression mode. See the MOV compression guide if a phone or editing export is too large. Changing a filename extension alone does not convert the video.
Batch-Compress Discord Clips on Desktop
Add multiple clips to UniConverter Desktop’s Video Compressor, configure the supported output settings, and start the batch. Check each exported file separately: different durations and scene complexity produce different sizes. Keep your originals so you can re-export a clip if its detail or audio suffers.
Online or Desktop: Choose the Right Workflow
Use online compression when you want a browser workflow for an occasional clip. Choose Desktop for batch jobs, supported format conversion and advanced settings. Desktop modes include Prioritize Quality, Prioritize Size and AI Compression; AI Compression currently outputs MP4/H.264 and does not guarantee an exact target size.
Trim and Convert Before Compressing for Discord
A long recording may become unreadable if squeezed into a very small attachment. Use the desktop editing tools to keep only the useful moment, then compress that shorter clip. If a file attaches but will not play, check its actual video and audio codecs and convert it when needed instead of repeatedly compressing it.
What Compression Helps With—and What It Cannot Fix
Smaller clips take less storage and, on the same connection, less data to transfer. The trade-off is that lossy re-encoding can remove fine detail. Keep the original, trim unnecessary footage first and compare the exported picture and audio before sharing.
Compression does not repair a damaged source or automatically solve every playback issue. If a small file still fails, check the actual codecs, upload conditions and the troubleshooting table below. For a long recording that needs its original detail, an access-controlled sharing link can be more suitable than a tiny attachment.
Choose a Video Size for Discord: 8MB, 10MB, 20MB or More
Need an 8MB or 10MB video compressor for Discord? Those are useful size targets, but they are not a universal current Discord limit. First check your account’s upload message, then leave some space below its cap.
Limit checked October 27, 2026: Discord’s File Attachments FAQ, updated September 30, lists 20MB for free accounts, 50MB for Nitro Basic and up to 1GB for Nitro. Discord notes that limits may vary during experiments; follow the limit displayed in your account.
| Target | When it helps | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8MB or 10MB | A small attachment or a deliberately conservative target. | Trim a long clip first; aggressive reduction can blur gameplay and text. |
| Under 20MB | A target for the free-account limit currently documented by Discord. | Leave headroom and check the downloaded file’s actual size. |
| Under 50MB | A larger attachment when your account permits it. | A smaller clip may still be easier for recipients to download. |
| A custom size, such as 500MB | A larger recording, only when your account permits that size. | This is a chosen target, not a promise of the online tool’s upload capacity. |
Percentage compression is different from an exact MB target
If a 100MB file becomes 70% of its original size, the result is roughly 70MB, not 30MB. If a control instead says “reduce by 70%,” the estimate is roughly 30MB. Read the setting’s label and check the exported file. A ratio alone cannot guarantee an 8MB, 10MB or 20MB result, especially when audio and encoding overhead are included.
Compress a Video Online5 Video Compressors for Discord: Which Should You Choose?
Start with the online compressor above for a quick clip. If you need a different workflow, compare desktop batch controls, a chosen MB target, or editing before export. These options serve different needs; this is a feature comparison, not a speed or quality ranking.
| Tool | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UniConverter | Online compression here; Desktop for batches and additional output settings. | Online and Desktop have different options and limits. Desktop installation and trial conditions apply. |
| 8mb.video | Browser compression with preset sizes. | Uploads the source to its service; review current input limits and privacy terms. |
| VEED | Browser quality and resolution controls. | Smaller output may lose detail; check the current tool and plan conditions. |
| FreeConvert | A compression method that targets a file size in MB. | Check input and usage allowances, then verify the downloaded size. |
| Microsoft Clipchamp | Trimming or editing a clip before exporting at a lower resolution. | Resolution selection is not an exact MB target; inspect the resulting file. |
1. UniConverter: Online for a Quick Clip, Desktop for a Batch
Use the uploader and three-step online instructions above for a quick task. For Desktop, follow this separate workflow:
- Open UniConverter’s Video Compressor and add the original clip or multiple clips.
- Choose a compression setting and supported output format. Prioritize Quality, Prioritize Size and AI Compression serve different needs; options vary by platform and mode. AI Compression currently outputs MP4/H.264 and does not guarantee an exact size.
- Adjust the available size setting and, when needed, resolution or frame rate. Preview if available. Start compression, then check each finished file’s size, picture and audio before attaching it to Discord.
See the Windows guide or Mac guide for your interface. Preserve your originals for another export if the result is too large or too soft.
2. 8mb.video: Choose a Preset Size
Open 8mb.video in your browser, select a local video and choose a size such as 8MB, 10MB or 20MB. Compress, download and inspect the result. Its name does not mean every Discord account currently has an 8MB cap. The service also works through a phone browser; it is not necessary to assume a separate mobile app.
3. VEED: Adjust Quality and Resolution
Open VEED’s compressor, upload a video and choose the available quality and resolution settings. Compress and download it, then check the result. Advanced controls may include CRF, bitrate and a frame-rate cap. VEED’s compression guide explains these controls; do not assume that they are UniConverter Online settings.
4. FreeConvert: Target a File Size in MB
Select your video, open Advanced Settings and choose “Target a file size (MB)” under Compression Method. Enter a target below your Discord cap, apply the settings and start compression. Download and check the output. This method is described in FreeConvert’s target-size guide; it does not establish an identical control in the uploader on this page.
5. Clipchamp: Trim First, Then Export Smaller
Import the video into a Clipchamp project, place it on the timeline and trim the unwanted portions. Select Export and choose an available lower resolution, such as 720p or 480p, if suitable for the clip. Download and inspect the file; a lower resolution does not guarantee a particular MB size. Microsoft’s export-resolution guide explains the choices.
Try UniConverter OnlineCompressed Video Still Will Not Upload or Play?
| Problem | What to try next |
|---|---|
| “File too large” after compression | Check the exported file, your account’s limit and which file you attached. Leave headroom, trim the source or compress again from the original with a stronger setting. |
| Video attaches but will not play | Test it locally. Try MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility; renaming MOV or MKV to MP4 does not convert its codecs. |
| Blurry gameplay or unreadable text | Keep a shorter segment, reduce compression strength and compare the export at its intended viewing size. Preserve detail rather than repeatedly re-encoding an already compressed copy. |
| Mobile upload stalls | Check the connection, available storage and browser download status. Save the completed output before attaching it in Discord; retry with a shorter clip if necessary. |
