Best and Easy Ways to Learn What is Picture-in-Picture

by Kayla Morrison • 2024-07-20 18:27:51 • Proven solutions

Modern computer and mobile operating systems allow users to multitask to their convenience. A good example is Picture in Picture, commonly used to display a video thumbnail as you do other tasks on your device. So this article will give you a more in-depth definition of this exciting function and how to use it on Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. Let’s learn!

Part 1. Know-it-all: What is Picture-in-Picture

So, what is Picture in Picture or PIP? Take this example; you’re looking to make a software tutorial for your YouTube audience, and you want your gestures displayed along with the video. In that case, you’ll use a program that supports PIP. Therefore, a PIP video is a small video thumbnail typically displayed on the computer or mobile screen as other functions are taking place. For instance, YouTube allows users to browse new content as they watch a PIP video in the bottom-right corner.

Part 2. How to Use Picture-in-Picture on your Android

Fortunately, Android users don’t have to download any third-party app from Google Play Store to enjoy the Picture in Picture function. However, this function is only available to Android 8.0 or later. With this tool, you can multitask efficiently while using Google Maps, YouTube, and Chrome. Other apps that support PIP include WhatsApp, Facebook, Google Duo, Netflix, Instagram, and more.

Below are the simple steps to enable and launch the PIP function on Android 8.0 or newer:

Step 1: Launch the Settings app and then click the Apps & notifications.

Step 2: On the following window, click the Special app access and then tap the Picture-in-picture.

Step 3: Choose an app that you want to use the function on, then enable the PIP toggle.

Note: Launching the PIP function depends on the app in use. For example, you must first enable the feature in the in-app settings on apps like VLC. For Google Chrome and YouTube (Premium), open the video, then tap the Home button.

Part 3. How to Use Picture-in-Picture on your iOS 14

Although Apple left it late to introduce the PIP function on iOS 14, it will still come in handy once you upgrade your operating system. Like on Android phones, this convenient feature lets iPhone users perform other tasks while taking Facetime calls or watching videos. Pinch the screen to zoom in or out while using the feature. iPhone apps that support this feature include FaceTime, iTunes, Podcasts, Apple TV, Twitch, WhatsApp, YouTube (Premium), and more.

Here is how to enable PIP automatically when playing a video on a compatible app:

Step 1: Open the Settings app, then tap the General<e/m>.

Step 2: In the General window, click the Picture in Picture before enabling the Start PIP Automatically toggle.

Step 3: Open your video, then tap the screen to display the playback controls. Now tap the PIP icon on the upper-right corner.

Part 4. How to Use Picture-in-Picture on Chrome

You can watch online videos in PIP mode using Google Chrome on desktops. Thankfully, this feature works with all online video-sharing platforms, although it can be troublesome at times. You’ll notice that it doesn’t work on popular platforms like Twitter and Dailymotion. Luckily, you can install a Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store and access the PIP function in a flash. If you’re using the inbuilt function, open the video, then right-click the screen. From there, choose Picture in Picture and enjoy your video.

Part 5. Bonus Tricks for Recording Picture-in-Picture Video on Windows and Mac

Sadly, all the methods above don’t teach you how to make Picture in Picture videos for sharing with your online audience. That’s why you need an efficient third-party program like Wondershare UniConverter. With this computer app, vloggers can create high-quality PIP videos using their inbuilt webcams or connect an external camera. When recording the desktop screen, you can add narrations with an internal or external mic, apply annotations such as texts, symbols, stickers, and more. And yes, you can set the output format, quality, and frame rate.

  • Record desktop screen, audio, and webcam easily and quickly.
  • Edit videos with features of cropping, trimming, rotating, adding watermarks, applying effects, and others.
  • Edit, enhance & personalize your videos file.
  • Batch video/audio compression and conversion are allowed.
  • Toolbox with additional functions like Screen Recorder, VR Converter, GIF Maker, Fixing Media Metadata, and more.
  • Supported OS: Windows 10/8/7/XP/Vista, macOS 11 Big Sur, 10.15 (Catalina), 10.14, 10.13, 10.12, 10.11, 10.10, 10.9, 10.8, 10.7.

Apply these steps to record desktop screen with Picture in Picture thumbnail using Wondershare UniConverter:

Step 1 Launch the Screen Recorder Tool.

Install and run Wondershare Screen Recorder on your Mac or Windows computer, then click the Screen Recorder tab. After that, press the Camcorder icon at the center of the Screen Recorder window to launch the recording tool.

Open the Wondershare Screen Recorder Tool

Step 2 Open the app or browser window you wish to record.

Now launch the app or browser window to record, then select a region to capture by dragging the cropper inward or outward. You can also manually set the recording area by entering the frame dimensions and locking the aspect ratio. And most importantly, choose an input microphone to add voiceovers and an input webcam to capture the video overlay.

Step 3 Customize recording settings.

Click the Settings icon below the REC button to open additional recording settings. You can now set the output format as MP4, AVI, or FLV on the window. Users can also set the output quality, frame rate, and destination path. Plus, you can manually enter the start and stop recording timer. This way, you don’t have to bother with the stop button once you reach your required recording duration.

Step 4 Start recording the desktop screen.

If everything is clear and polished, press the red REC button to begin recording your desktop screen. Click the arrow on the desktop screen to launch the recording taskbar. Here, you can enable or disable voice narrations by clicking the Microphone icon, turn off system sound by clicking the Speaker button, and enable or disable the Picture in Picture effect by tapping the Webcam icon. The PIP screen will appear in the lower-left corner of the window. Drag it to move it around the recording screen.
