Mac’s iMessage feature can come in handy sometimes. It allows you to engage your texts even when your iPhone isn’t close by. As if that’s not enough, this feature will enable users to sync text messages on any Apple environment through iCloud. Unfortunately, message notifications can become an unwanted distraction if you don’t know how to turn off iMessage on Mac. But thankfully, learning how to turn off iMessage on MacBook is a breeze with the right methods. Let’s see how!

Part 1. How to turn off iMessage on Mac easily

In this guide, you’ll learn how to turn off iMessage entirely as well as how to disable notifications while you can still use the app. However, this method works for Catalina (macOS 10.15), although it can also come in handy for older macOS versions.

Log out of iMessage:

Step 1: On your Mac computer, open the Messages app.

Step 2: Click the Messages tab and then tap the Preferences icon.

Disable iMessage Notifications:

If you still want to use iMessage, but without the annoying notifications, you can disable notifications. Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: On the top-left corner, click the Apple logo to launch the Apple menu.

Step 2: Next, select the System Preferences option and then click the Notifications icon.

choose System Preferences tab

Step 3: On the Notifications window, select the Messages app from the list of apps on the left pane.

Step 4: Under the Messages alert style section, click None. This will automatically disable iMessage notifications on Mac as you continue to enjoy the app’s services.

Note: You can enable iMessage notifications on Mac by clicking the Allow Notifications from Messages toggle on the Notifications window under the Messages section.

Part 2. Bonus Tips for How to fix Messages when it’s not working properly

Suppose the iMessage app fails to sync correctly with your iPhone or iPad, what’s next?. Although you can quickly diagnose this problem by signing out and then signing in once again, the problem might persist. So to sort out this problem once and for all, apply these few tips:

  • Restart all devices-the first go-to solution is to restart both your phone and computer. This can jumpstart everything and get iMessages syncing once more.
  • Use verified Apple ID-Another useful trick is to ensure that the email address and mobile number you’re using on your iMessage account are correct. To do that, visit the Apple website and sign in to your account. Under the Account section, ensure that you have the right email address and phone number.
  • Check iMessage's iPhone setting-To confirm that your iPad or iPhone is set up correctly, click Settings > Messages. Next, choose Send & Receive and then tick your email address and phone number on the “YOU CAN BE REACHED BY IMESSAGE AT” section.
  • Use similar Apple ID account-Finally, you need to make sure that you’re using the same Apple ID account on both Mac and iOS. This should be pretty straightforward to do.

Conclusion

I hope you now know how to turn off iMessage on Mac quickly to avoid those disturbing notifications. But by signing out and then resigning, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone because you’ll also diagnose any iMessage problems in the process. And if your iMessage is still not functioning smoothly, try the reliable tips mentioned above.
